7th Grade Advanced Math Class

"House Plans Project"

After students in the 7th grade Advanced Math class learned about area and area of composite figures, they got to create a culminating project to emphasize

those math skills.

Students designed a dream house of their choice

(with some parameters and specific expectations).

They found the area of each room and the total area

of their house. In addition, students calculated

the total cost of their dream house using average

state costs per square foot.

Finally, students researched careers of interest

and potential salaries to identify the

affordability of their dream houses.

TRANSPORTATION HERO

TONYA PENNINGTON

“I am so proud of Tonya,” said Louise Mayhew, Assistant Director of Support Services over Food Services and Transportation. “She kept her cool; she used her school bus training to keep all the students and coaches safe while her bus was on fire. Her favorite bus.”

Tonya Pennington was recognized as a transportation hero. Pennington, a school bus driver for AUSD, was celebrated for her quick thinking when she was driving the Atascadero High baseball team home from a game in Morro Bay on April 2. While driving, she heard a loud pop and pulled the bus over on Highway 41, told the baseball coaches to evacuate the team, and then went to the engine compartment with a fire extinguisher, where she found the engine on fire. She delegated emergency calls, moved the students away from the bus, and even went back into the bus to retrieve the players’ gear.

SAN GABRIEL LATO FIELD TRIP

The Oak Ambassadors did a wonderful job teaching on the trail and the kids were engaged with nature classroom activities with Cal Poly PERL and Pacific Wildlife Care.

The students encountered a large rattlesnake and a baby cottontail rabbit together - only about 5' apart- on the trail. OA Kaiya was first to spot both. SMART SOCIAL .COM

Dear AUSD Parents,

We are excited to tell you about an amazing opportunity that you can take advantage of! Many of our students have a cellphone, tablet, or even gaming systems with Internet access and social media. While advances in technology have many great rewards, there is also the potential for harm. As parents, we can get ahead of this and take action to ensure our children are using social media in a way that will benefit them and not harm them.

In addition to cyberbullying, there are concerns about safety, mental health, and wellness. It seems that every day another social media app or social media challenge becomes popular. In some cases, these apps allow strangers to contact children, or make it easy to anonymously bully other children. Or, the social media challenges pose great dangers to students’ or bystanders’ physical safety. In answer to these dangers, we have been looking for a resource that can help parents of our community learn the ins and outs of social media and online dangers, and the challenges of parenting in the digital age.

We are excited to announce that the AUSD has recently partnered with SmartSocial.com for its on-demand courses for parents. The SmartSocial resources cover a wide range of digital and social media topics. We have purchased a parent subscription package to these resources to help you learn how to navigate the negative (and positive) parts of social media with your students.

With more than 130 parent, educator, & student courses available on-demand, this resource promises to help bridge the gap between the ever-changing digital landscape and the very real need to guide our students.

Some of our courses include:

  • Smartphone and Social Media Agreement Class
  • Navigating TikTok
  • Navigating Instagram
  • Navigating YouTube
  • Navigating Snapchat
  • Navigating Fortnite, Overwatch, Call of Duty & Violent Video Games
  • Navigating Roblox, Minecraft, & Non-Violent Video Games
  • Navigating College Readiness on Social Media Networks

As we all know, the digital footprint and the social media presence that young people create can have a lasting impact. Parental guidance, as well as guidance from trusted adults at school, are needed. For older students, we will begin the process of preparing for college and career and SmartSocial.com can help parents support their students in putting their best foot forward with social media and a digital portfolio.

Normally membership to the SmartSocial resources is $60-180/year. AUSD parents can now join the SmartSocial Membership for FREE. Our District's membership gives each family access to the SmartSocial courses for free for the next 18 months. This is a unique opportunity to learn from experts in the social media space from the comfort of your home or office.

PLAYGROUND ROCKS!

The Santa Rosa school community gathered on Saturday, March 26th, to give the Kindergarten playground some much needed TLC! Parents, teachers, staff, and community members worked together to clean, organize, build, and paint. Thanks to generous donations from Atascadero 7-11, The Nest, Miner’s ACE Hardware, and Home Depot, we were able to repair the exterior of the playground shed, paint a new mural, build a music wall, and purchase many new toys and pieces of playground equipment. Our school is grateful to our local community for providing such a wonderful opportunity for us to give back to our students and modernize part of our campus. The children are already enjoying their new and exciting playground.

Garden Club offers students a great opportunity to learn valuable skills of patience and sharing as they work toward a common goal. Conflicts naturally arise, especially when everyone wants to use the shovel and they only have one.
